Unique city penthouse sells for $2.4m

A PRESTIGIOUS Newcastle penthouse apartment has sold for $2.43 million at auction.

The prime north-east corner apartment in Newcastle’s The York apartments went under the hammer on Saturday.

Sonia Walkom, of Walkom Real Estate, said the auction attracted six registered bidders but was sold to a Newcastle business person for $2.43million.

It was the first time The York penthouse had gone up for sale since it was bought off the plan for $2.4million in 2003.

Ms Walkom said she thought the price was ‘‘fair’’ in the current market.

‘‘This is one of the best views in Newcastle. It overlooks Newcastle Beach and the harbour and up to the cathedral,’’ Ms Walkom said prior to the sale.

The three-bedroom, three-bathroom apartment known as 1201/61 Shortland Esplanade also features three car park spaces and a storage facility.

Similar properties in the nearby The Royal Newcastle Beach have sold from $1.8 million to more than $2 million during the past two years.

However, sales in the high-end apartment market in Newcastle are still a far cry from the early- to mid-2000s when they sold off the plan for record figures.

This is the first time The York penthouse has gone up for sale since it was bought off the plan for $2.4 million in 2003.
