VIDEO: Search for cartridge after police shot at during car chase

SPECIALIST police have spent several hours scouring a rural road looking for a spent cartridge after car thieves fired at police during a car chase at Lake Macquarie last night.

A stretch of Freemans Drive near Cooranbong had been partially closed to traffic as a ballistics dog and officers from the operational support group (OSG) searched along a 500-metre section.

Lake Macquarie detectives have been called in to investigate how two police officers narrowly avoided being shot when a car thief opened fire on them during the car chase about 10.30pm last night.

Police said officers had attempted to stop a car after confirming it was stolen.

When the car failed to stop, a chase began before the passenger leant out of his window and fired a shot at the police car.

The shot hit the windscreen but did not injure the officers.

Duty officer Inspector Murray Lundberg said the pursuit was stopped a short time later.
