THIS is a copy of the letter I sent to Newcastle City Council. I encourage the public to write to the council regarding this matter.
I have been living in Newcastle for the past four years and I am surprised that in this time there has been no introduction of a green compost bin.
I grew up in a rural area in the Nambucca Valley, five kilometres along a dirt road, and had a green composting bin. I cannot understand why Newcastle, the second-largest city in NSW, does not have the facilities to compost food waste. Many councils have a composting service where the compost is processed and sold to the general public. While I love living in the city of Newcastle, I do not feel that we are progressive enough with regards to recycling. The environment is in a fragile state and there are many simple things we can do to help it.
This is just one of them.
