FIRE crews saved 30 homes at Kurri Kurri and Stanford Merthyr on Wednesday night as warm conditions and gusty winds fanned a large blaze in nearby bushland.

More than 100 firefighters from the NSW Rural Fire Service and Fire and Rescue NSW battled the 65-hectare blaze for more than six hours.

The fire, which sparked in bush off Stanford Road, closed Main Road, which joins Kurri Kurri and Maitland, in both directions for most of the night.

A NSW RFS spokesman said firefighters began property protection about 5pm as the blaze began burning out of control and threatening homes.

The spokesman declined to comment on whether the fire was considered deliberate or not but did say relaunched Strike Force Tronto  was investigating.

Police found two vehicles burning in bushland last night that may have contributed to the cause of the fire.
