THE former state member for Lake Macquarie, Merv Hunter, has died. Mr Hunter, an ALP member, represented the Lake electorate from 1969 to 1991.
He was the Lake Macquarie shire president in 1969 and a councillor in the 1960s.
Merv Hunter’s son Jeff Hunter succeeded him as Lake Macquarie MP, holding the position from 1991 to 2007.
Jeff Hunter said his greatest memory of his dad was during election campaigns.
‘‘We letterboxed the whole electorate by foot in those days,’’ Jeff Hunter said.
‘‘My father would drive a carload of people around delivering campaign material and dogs would chase us up the road.’’
Jeff Hunter said the family home was the electorate office in the early days of his father’s political career.
‘‘We were all told we had to be polite to anyone who rang no matter what kind of mood they were in,’’ he said.
Former Charlestown MP Richard Face said Mr Hunter was a ‘‘well known identity in west Lake Macquarie’’.
‘‘He was a great representative of the people,’’ Mr Face, a close friend, said.‘‘He did a lot of work in the community.’’
Merv Hunter’s funeral will be held on Monday at 2pm at Lake Macquarie Memorial Park, Ryhope.
