MORE than a dozen Lake Macquarie businesses have been stung by scammers passing counterfeit $50 notes in the past month, prompting a warning from police.
The notes have been reported by 16 separate businesses in Swansea, Belmont, Charlestown, Kahibah, Warners Bay and Edgeworth since December 18 last year.
Lake Macquarie detectives are exploring the possibility the incidents are linked and have warned shopkeepers to be vigilant when receiving $50 notes as payment.
Anyone who receives a suspicious note is asked to promptly contact police. They are also asked to note anything that might identify the people passing the notes, such as physical descriptions, clothing or vehicles.
Police said bank notes should be printed on plastic and the clear window should be part of the bank note, not an addition.
The Australian coat of arms and the Commonwealth star should be visible when the bank note is held up to the light.
Anyone with information should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
