Hunter wins top-10 wine travel spot

A MAJOR wine industry publication has pinpointed the Hunter as one of the world’s best regions for visitors to take a tipple this year.

Wine Enthusiast, which bills itself as the world’s largest periodical devoted exclusively to wine and spirits, has named the region among its 10 best wine travel destinations worldwide. The award recognised the Hunter based on overall cultural experience, timeliness, travel infrastructure and wine quality.

Pipping the Barossa and McLaren Vale as Australia’s sole representative, the list places the Hunter alongside parts of Spain, California, Brazil and Italy.

‘‘The region’s proximity to Sydney and its legions of tourists have led most of the wineries to develop sophisticated cellar-door operations,’’  Joe Czerwinski wrote of the region.

Hunter Valley Wine Country Tourism executive manager  Dean Gorddard said the accolade  acknowledged the Hunter’s unique appeals.

Hunter Valley Wine Industry Association president Andrew Margan said the honour was reward for the hard work done to promote the region and would drive the area’s many providers to maintain their high standards.
