A DRIVE is under way to recruit more Hunter volunteers to help rescue whales, dolphins and seals stranded on the region’s coast.
The Organisation for the Rescue and Research of Cetaceans in Australia (ORRCA) will run a workshop at Nelson Bay tomorrow to train new members.
The group bills itself as the state’s only wildlife carer accredited to assist with marine mammal rescues.
Vice-president Shona Lorigan said resident dolphins, increasing seal numbers and migrating whales made Port Stephens an important part of the state’s coastline for rescuers.
‘‘It really is a very key area and we’re definitely looking for new members,’’ Ms Lorigan said.
‘‘We have some quite active members in the Port Stephens area but we’ve really got an increased workload with seal populations recovering.’’
Bookings for the Nelson Bay training workshop are $75 and must be made on 94153333, ahead of the event.
