Bookstore closes after nearly two decades

THE sun is going down on Raymond Terrace's most prominent bookstore after nearly two decades.

Sunset Books and Music, the main street book store which owner Greg Field has operated for 10 years, will close at the end of next month.

Mr Field said the decision was made over Christmas because of a tough retail environment, increasing digital and overseas competition and consumer expectations.

"People are expecting lower prices and a lot are buying online," he said.

The Newcastle Herald reported a year ago that Sunset Books and Music had launched an e-book store in an attempt to take Hunter bookselling into the digital age.

But Mr Field said the site had been less successful than originally hoped because of the enormity of established e-book distributors.

"You're up against a heavyweight competitor which makes it very difficult to get any market share," he said.

"Obviously it's a sad time for me and it's a sad time for my customers."

Sunset Books and Music will run a progressive sale until late next month.

Mr Field said he would also publish his book Death on Danger Island, part of which is available online through Wattpad.
