BRENDAN Smith’s titles hopes in the Victorian PGA Championships disappeared today after he carded a disastrous round of seven-over 79 at Creswick.
The Belmont professional began day three equal third at six-under, only a shot behind the joint leaders Steve Dartnall and amateur Nathan Holman.
Any confidence Smith has developed in his new aggressive approach with his wedges soon eroded today when he dropped five shots on the opening four holes.
Smith pulled back a shot with a birdie on the fifth, but he dropped another four shots during the middle holes and then carded a second birdie late.
With a round to play Smith is one over in 24th place, 12 strokes behind new leader David McKenzie, who stole the lead at 11 under after a tournament-high 65 today.
Charlestown’s Aaron Townsend crept up to 18th with 71 today to be one under.
Waratah’s Leigh McKechnie (74) continued to struggle at two over.
