Taking the (sand) bar for the 10th year

LAW students gave free legal advice to the community at Newcastle Surf Club yesterday to mark the 10th anniversary of the Law on the Beach initiative.

The drop-in clinic is run by teams of supervised students from the University of Newcastle to gain practical legal experience.

People are invited to sit with the students who document their case.

Students then advise their supervisor of the details and together determine whether they can take on the case.

Fourth-year students Laura Waterford, 21, Tiahna Owens, 21, Hannah Latham, 24, and second-year graduate Katherine Gillies, 27, all felt positive about the experience.

Miss Owens said one client had travelled from the Central Coast to access the free service.

‘‘He was really open and answered all our questions,’’ she said.

The students complete hours at the legal centre as a requirement of their Diploma of Legal Studies.

The clinic is open every Wednesday until February 20.
