HUNDREDS of Newcastle residents will sharpen their pencils and flex their fingers for a mass drawing event across the city tomorrow.
The Big Draw is the world’s biggest celebration of drawing and it has grown into a month-long festival running throughout October in the United Kingdom.
Every year more people across the world join in Big Draw events and Newcastle will attempt the first large-scale collaboration in Australia.
English born illustrator Liz Anelli was heavily involved in the UK event before moving to Newcastle with her husband in February last year.
She has been working on the Newcastle Big Draw with Newcastle City Council, the Maritime Centre, Livesites Now and the University of Newcastle.
‘‘Drawing is a basic form of communication, that’s what I love about it,’’ Ms Anelli said.
‘‘In some cultures it’s seen as only something children do but a lot of people use drawing in their work every day without even thinking about it.’’
The Big Draw Newcastle will run from 10am to 4pm and will stretch from the Maritime Centre to Newcastle Museum, Wheeler Place, Civic Park, Newcastle Region Library and Newcastle Art Gallery.
Participants will be encouraged to walk between locations and try a variety of drawing activities.
