POLICE have called off a search for a possible missing swimmer who was seen entering the water at Norah Head but not returning to shore.
Another swimmer, who became concerned for the man’s welfare after seeing him at Cabbage Tree Bay on Saturday afternoon, returned yesterday to find the man’s belongings still on the shoreline.
An extensive search was conducted for the man yesterday and this morning and police say there are now serious concerns for his welfare.
The discarded belongings include prescription glasses.
However, today’s search has been called off due to the severe weather.
An air and land search was conduceted this morning, with water police continuing to monitor the conditions.
Tuggerah Lakes police have stressed they yet to receive any missing persons reports from friends or family.
Police said the swimmer was described as being of Caucasian appearance, about 178cm tall, aged in his 50s or 60s, with average build and dark thinning hair.
He was wearing dark blue or black shorts and also left behind a blue beach towel and black hat with ‘Hawaii’ written on it.
Investigators would like to hear from anyone who was at the location on Saturday and may have left their belongings behind.
They are also appealing to members of the public who have any information about the incident to contact them.
