Vintage bicycles on show

HUNTER bike enthusiasts took a trip down memory lane yesterday as models from their childhood were put on display.

Wickham Motorcycle Co hosted the second annual vintage bike show with about 75 old-school wheels turning back the clock.

Most were from the 1980s era when BMX bikes were all the rage, though a 1953 Malvern Star Coronation bike was the oldest on show.

Organiser Daryl Fox said hundreds of people came by to check out the collection.

‘‘Some came from as far as Kempsey and a lot from Sydney,’’ he said. ‘‘There were a few pro racers from the ’80s there and they just couldn’t believe some of the bikes we had. They were getting real nostalgic,’’ Mr Fox said.

The bike scene in the Hunter was continuing to grow, he said, and more people were starting to reconnect with their childhood.

‘‘A lot of people these days are buying what they couldn’t afford in the ’80s and restoring them.’’

About 30 of the visitors made a bike trip down to Nobbys to celebrate their love for all things two-wheeled.
