THE former Shortland Electricity site on Hunter Street was razed yesterday as demolition work continues in the Civic precinct.
The building is one of five at the corner of Hunter and Auckland streets that will be levelled for a potential University of Newcastle city campus.
Work began at the Performing Arts Newcastle building on Auckland Street last week, and led to the discovery of a time capsule placed by the Grand United Order of Oddfellows in 1907.
The single-storey Shortland Electricity Arcade, wedged between the Civic Hotel, Civic Arcade and PAN building, is not considered to be of heritage significance.
More than three years after the Civic Hotel was gutted by fire, it will soon be in the sights of the wrecking ball.
The pub, the former Hunter on Hunter, once had a checkered reputation for attracting a rough and tough crowd of drinkers.
Newcastle City Council’s timetable suggests work will start on the demolition of the Civic Hotel on March 11 and be complete on April5.
