GALLERY: CBD cherry-picker rescue

TWO men have had a lucky escape when their cherry picker leant up against a light pole after a wheel crashed through a pit on the footpath below, lurching the cage forward.

Rocky Lawler and Danny Wooderson were about 10 metres above the ground chipping away at a concrete facade when the cherry picker rolled forward towards the intersection of Watt and King streets.

Mr Lawler said the picker would have stopped before crashing to the road below, with its arm only resting on a flimsy light pole.

The pair spent at least 15 minutes in the air as fire crews worked to rescue them.

Mr Wooderson from Rutherford, said he hadn’t realised what was happening when the lift began to lurch.

‘‘I just felt it move, I didn’t know what was happening – I wasn’t looking at the ground,’’ Mr Wooderson said.

‘‘I’m not good with heights at the best of times.’’

Visibly shaken but relieved to be on the ground, Mr Wooderson’s first phone call was to his wife ‘‘to tell her I’m all right before she hears about it on the news’’.

He hoped to take the rest of the day off ‘‘but I’ll wait to hear from the boss’’.

Mr Lawler said it all happened in a few seconds.

‘‘[I just thought] what the bloody hell is happening here, this shouldn’t be happening,’’ he said.
