VIDEO: Herald journalists win at Kennedy Awards

THE Newcastle Herald  won two major gongs on Friday night  at The Kennedy Awards for Excellence in NSW Journalism.

Joanne McCarthy was named Journalist of the Year for her body of work on child sex abuse in the Catholic Church.

Peter Stoop won the outstanding news photograph award for his picture of a towering wall of flames during a bushfire at Aberdare in January.

The Kennedy Awards are named in honour of legendary Sydney crime reporter Les Kennedy, who died in 2011.

Last night’s awards featured the inaugural Chris Watson Award for outstanding regional newspaper reporting, named in honour of the former Newcastle Herald editor and journalist.

Newcastle Herald journalist Matthew Kelly was a finalist for the award, which was won by The Border Mail.

Last night’s award continued McCarthy’s success after she was named the Australian Journalist of the Year and the Northern NSW Journalist of the Year.

Newcastle Herald editor Chad Watson said the awards were a fantastic reward.

‘‘It’s a great result for the hard work of Joanne and Peter, and it’s reflective of the extraordinary local journalism that graces our paper and our website.

‘‘We take great pride in being the voice of the Hunter.

‘‘With the inaugural Chris Watson Award honouring a dear friend and great journalist, it was a great night for the Newcastle Herald.’’
