MAJOR changes are under way at Maitland’s two blackspot roundabouts under a $45million upgrade project.
Roadworks on Cessnock Road, leading to the roundabout near Maitland railway station, include the building of a U-turn bay.
Work on a left-turn lane from Cessnock Road onto the New England Highway is due to begin in November, followed later next year by building of an east-west overpass.
The roundabout near Maitland hospital is due to have left-turn lanes off the New England Highway to High Street and Bungaree Street and improved streetlighting and other pedestrian safety work finished by November.
New traffic lights at Johnson Street will be erected next year.
A Roads and Maritime Services spokesman said the works may cause delays on Cessnock Road.
‘‘Some lane closures and traffic control will be in place [during construction] with a 40km/h speed limit,’’ the spokesman said.
