WHAT a pitiful state our supposedly ‘‘democratic’’ Newcastle City Council has sunk to (‘‘Fight over the art of restructuring’’ Herald 1/10).
Given the talk of ‘‘peril’’ around art gallery director Ron Ramsey earlier in the year, could this be confused for some sort of civic sabotage of our esteemed cultural institution?
Where is the consistency? If the council is so bereft of funds why is it even contemplating spending money on buildings it doesn’t own, such as the former post office? And if, as council says, it is the responsibility of 15-year-olds not to drown on our beaches because we are so tightfisted not to pay lifeguards to patrol them, then it certainly is the responsibility of business owners to paint their own facades with their money and not our council rates.
