I ATTENDED the public meeting at Newcastle City Hall this week regarding some user groups’ unhappiness with certain council decisions.
I sat and listened in awe at the political pressure delivered by minority groups.
We have been told over and over again, this city faces insolvency and tough decisions had to be made.
The art gallery supporters stood up for the art gallery director, a position that’s staying under a restructured arrangement. What about the 90 ordinary workers who lost their jobs entirely?
The Loft, as I understand it, was a rate-subsidised expensive hangout for 60 or so teenagers at a net cost of $800,000 per year.
The paid weekend lifeguards were a duplication of service already provided by Hunter Surf Life Saving.
As for the management restructure, of course managers at that level earning over $160,000 per year should be on performance contracts.
Good on lord mayor Jeff McCloy and the Liberal and independent councillors for sticking to your guns.
Please do not give into the minority groups that have dictated the council’s and city’s agenda for far too long.
