ONE can only feel despair for the havoc that Newcastle lord mayor Jeff McCloy has caused the Newcastle Art Gallery, Ron Ramsey and the wider Newcastle community with his controversial restructuring of one of the best-managed galleries in this country.
Our gallery provides an avenue for everybody to see beyond the stereotype of a steel city. What lies beneath is a strong artistic and cultural pulse that suggests we are grown-ups, not philistines. The endless grey concrete that now fronts the gallery is an appropriate epitaph for this council.
One can only hope that we see the last of Mr McCloy at the next election, and those representatives that let us down when the NSW government reneged on its $7million contribution to what could have been.
