LETTER: Art of fighting for culture

WHAT a wonderful gift to the city of Newcastle is Brett Whiteley’s sculpture, Black Totem II, a symbol of renewal.

How tragic is it that the man who negotiated for 14 months for this gift appears likely to soon lose his job.

How ironic that it was supposed to represent the renewal of the art gallery, which is now doomed to decline.

A recent Newcastle City Council advertisement for five new managerial positions boasts of “major revitalisation projects” and “some exciting changes”, so why do I feel as depressed as I did when Davis Hughes decided Sydney could no longer afford Joern Utzon’s services to complete his Opera House?

Wendy Whiteley asked last Saturday, “Why do we have to fight for culture?”  – to loud acclaim.
