LETTER: Council’s gallery plans shameful

I AM a non-chardonnay drinking resident of Ward One, born and bred in Newcastle but have lived elsewhere in Australia and in East Timor.

I have been back living in Newcastle since 2006.  I am not a member of the Newcastle Art Gallery but I visit regularly as I love looking at the art.

I am particularly impressed with exhibitions made up of the gallery’s   magnificent paintings.

I have grave concerns about recent decisions made by the council about the future of the art gallery.

The decision not to support the extension was a great shame and now the short-sighted decision to have one director for the museum, civic theatre and the art gallery.

It is destructive for the gallery and brings shame on our city.

We should be supporting the development of our art gallery as the best regional gallery in Australia. I hope the councillors   change their minds.
