A MUSWELLBROOK mine has claimed bragging rights in the Hunter Valley Open Cut Mines Rescue Competition.
Featuring seven of the region’s mines, the event pits volunteer rescue crews against each other to test their responses in crisis scenarios.
Overall winners Mt Arthur Coal also came first in the industrial rescue, road crash rescue and heavy vehicle rescue categories.
Mt Arthur Coal Open Cut Operations general manager Xavier Wagner said long hours had paid off for the mine’s first win since 2007.
‘‘Rescue team members voluntarily make themselves available to fellow employees in need of assistance, which can sometimes put them in the line of fire as well,’’ Mr Wagner said.
Hunter Valley Mines Rescue manager David Connell said the event gave rescue volunteers a chance to hone their skills under pressures similar to those they would face in real emergencies.
‘‘These competitions also enhance the safety culture within the brigadesmen’s workplace,’’ Mr Connell said.
