LETTER: Query on suspensions

NEWCASTLE City Council must have its reasons for standing down ‘‘future city’’ director  Judy Jaeger and Newcastle Art Gallery director Ron Ramsey   on full pay (‘‘Suspended’’ Herald 21/11).

But, so far, council has not shared those alleged reasons with the public and nothing has been proven. What justifications should be so significant to warrant such  public censure? In my opinion,   ratepayers deserve to know why.

The Herald reported   that an email sent to councillors by  general manager Ken  Gouldthorp described the standing down as an ‘‘operational matter’’ and warned them to refrain from speaking out.

But there is still no comment  on the matter from anyone, including Mr Gouldthorp or lord mayor Jeff McCloy.

Ms  Jaeger and Mr Ramsey have probably also been ‘‘gagged’’ from making any public comment.

An ‘‘operational matter’’ sounds harmless enough but council’s action has had the opposite effect.

Council should be asked to immediately explain itself.

  Brian Ladd,

Newcastle
