School newspaper competition winners: photos, video

THE stories have been edited, the headlines written, the photographs taken and the cartoons drawn. And on Tuesday, the students from the 96 schools who entered the Newcastle Herald school newspaper competition learnt if their journalistic efforts had resulted in recognition at the 2013 award ceremony at Hunter Stadium.

More than 300 students, teachers and parents from schools as far south as Gosford, as far west as Merriwa and as far north as Taree attended the ceremony, with more than $8000 worth of prizes on offer.

Now in its 25th year, the competition is sponsored by the Newcastle Permanent Building Society and involves student teams creating their own two-page newspaper, which appears within the pages of the Herald. Students must research and write articles, take photographs, draw cartoons and create an advertisement based on a theme supplied by the Perm.

Newcastle Permanent chief executive Terry Millett commended the students, teachers and principals for harnessing their enthusiasm for the project.
