PATIENTS at John Hunter Children’s Hospital were given an early Christmas present on Thursday as Darth Vader and his stormtroopers joined Santa  to bring some festive cheer to those spending  the holidays in bed.

Newcastle Knights players and clown doctors also lent a hand.

The hospital’s communication manager, Lucas Coleman, said it was a ‘‘chance to give the kids a reason to smile’’.

‘‘Each year we have entertainers and sports people come round and visit all the children in the wards,’’ he said. ‘‘Hunter Valley Zoo comes every year with a wombat.’’

Santa made sure he visited every ward to deliver presents to each child.
