SOME of the region’s unsung heroes were recognised at the Newcastle Herald Carols By Candlelight at King Edward Park last night

The finalists of the inaugural Newcastle Herald Hunter Water Hunter Hero Awards were honoured on stage before Newy parkrun event director and running advocate Dave Robertson was named the overall winner.

Mr Robertson, who has been a driving force behind the running revival gripping the Hunter, helped establish the popular parkrun events in Newcastle, Maitland, Speers Point, Fingal Bay and at Blackbutt Reserve.

The awards, which recognise the extraordinary deeds of the unsung heroes living in our community, began in February with nominees appearing every Monday in the Community section of the Herald.

The 10 finalists were Sue Barker, Verity Currey, Michelle Faithfull, Roz and Kev Holme, Peter and Jane Harvey, Dr Harold Jarvis, Lynda Miller, Kalla Oakes, Margaret Pannell and Mr Robertson.

As well as a trophy, Mr Robertson won a six month subscription to the Newcastle Herald, tickets to the January 15 Celtic Woman show, and a Greg Ray book pack.

If you know someone who has gone above and beyond the call of duty for the community, nominate them in the 2014 Hunter Hero Awards by emailing community@theherald.com.au or calling 49795999.
