Join the Hunter Health Kick 

THE Hunter region is among the nation’s fattest, with 70per cent of the population overweight, and nearly half of those obese.

As the Voice of the Hunter, the Newcastle Herald wants to do something about that. 

In partnership with Charlestown Square, the Herald will launch the Hunter Health Kick on January 11.


Spearheaded by fitness trainer and Herald columnist Renee Valentine, the Hunter Health Kick will run for 12 weeks from January 11, culminating in the goal of walking or running in the Herald Hill2Harbour fun run on April 6.

The health kick will encourage readers to improve their health and fitness through sensible eating and simple exercise.

Collectively, we’d like to lose a tonne of weight and walk, skip or run 100,000 kilometres.

Renee Valentine will provide three workouts a week you can tailor to your fitness level.

FitnFast gym in Charlestown Square will offer free membership to participants for a month and a reduced rate thereafter. 

The first 50 people to sign up will get free entry to the Herald Hill2Harbour Fun Run, and the next 250 will get half-price entry.

And all participants can take advantage of a special subscription deal to the Herald. For six months you can have the print edition delivered on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday (the days of our Health Kick program), and delivered digitally six days a week, for  $99.

To enter the health kick, participants will register at Charlestown Square on January 11 or 12. A $10 fee includes a showbag with T-shirt and water bottle, Fila women’s socks, 20 per cent discount vouchers for Fila and Lorna Jane, and a Mojo Health herbalist consultation and sample products.

An added incentive for participants who agree to be privately weighed and measured at registration is a $50 GPT gift card to spend at Charlestown Square for every five kilograms lost.
