STOCKTON sand dunes are likely to be off limits all long weekend after they were closed yesterday because severe weather created quicksand.
The National Parks and Wildlife Service announced the closure yesterday for safety reasons.
National Parks and Wildlife Service Hunter manager Robert Quirk said that exceptionally high tides and large waves had caused severe erosion to Stockton Beach.
This included deep flooding behind the fore dune that had created large areas of quicksand and made access to the area extremely dangerous.
With insufficient beach remaining to allow safe use by four-wheel-drives, the entire 32 kilometres had been closed, he said.
