Petite sweets offer a treat

LIFE is sweet for The Sweet Boutique’s Anna Farthing.

The mother of three ventured into making cupcakes for a school fair in March last year before launching her own business making petite cupcakes.

A little more than a year later, and she’s sold thousands of cupcakes in sophisticated flavours such as vanilla poached pear, salted caramel, hazelnut and raspberry, and hot chocolate and marshmallow.

The Sweet Boutique has a popular stall at the monthly Olive Tree Market at The Junction and has launched a delivery service known as The Baking Run.

The Baking Run takes Anna’s delicious petite sweets to the streets. Boxes of eight or 12 cupcakes are delivered to workplaces and homes around Newcastle each Friday. For some, it’s a sweet treat to finish off the week, others are gifts, some bosses even treat employees of the month to a box of the petite cupcakes.

The flavours change from week to week depending on seasonal ingredients and Anna’s inspiration. The lucious vanilla poached pear cupcake – complete with a piece of delicate poached pear inside – was inspired by her husband’s love of poached pear desserts.

Whatever flavour, she endeavours to make the cupcakes with the best ingredients and the greatest of care.

From the poached pears, to the salted caramel, to the raspberry coulis, it’s all made from scratch each week.

Anna explained that The Sweet Boutique’s petite cupcakes are more of a dessert than a child’s party treat.

‘‘People don’t just eat dessert for the sake of something sweet. If you are going to eat dessert, make it something worthwhile and different ... something you couldn’t make at home,’’ she told GT.
