Edgeworth teen dead, two missing near Ghosties Beach

A MAJOR search was under way today for two men missing from a southern Lake Macquarie beach after an Edgeworth teenager’s body was found washed ashore this morning.

Police said a member of the public raised the alarm after finding fishing equipment and other personal items abandoned on a rock shelf at Moonee Beach, within the Munmorah State Conservation Area, about 6.30am.

The body of an 18-year-old Edgeworth woman was found washed up on nearby Ghosties Beach, just south of Catherine Hill Bay.

Police have since discovered the teenager travelled to the area with two male friends, a Gateshead man, aged 18, and a Windale man, aged 20, possibly to go fishing and surfing.

A major search operation, involving Tuggerah Lakes and Lake Macquarie local area commands, Marine Area Command, the Rescue Squad and Polair, has been suspended, but will resume early tomorrow morning.

Police have located a car belonging to the young woman’s family at Catherine Hill Bay, while clothing belonging to all three teenagers was discovered on the beach.

The woman’s body has been taken to Newcastle Morgue for post mortem examination and inquiries into the circumstances surrounding her death are continuing.

The area is the same place where five people from two families drowned two years ago.
