Newcastle duo in Opals Olympic team

NEWCASTLE’S Suzy Batkovic and Jenni Screen have been named in the Australian Opals team for the London Olympic Games but fellow Hunter basketball product Damian Martin has missed final selection for the Boomers.

Batkovic and Screen were members of Australia’s silver medal team at the Beijing Olympic Games four years ago, and Screen won gold with the Opals at the 2006 world championships.

The reigning Women’s National Basketball League Most Valuable Player, Batkovic is lining up for her third Olympics after also collecting silver with the Opals at Athens in 2004.

Martin, a Gloucester product who represented Lake Macquarie and Newcastle as a junior before embarking on his National Basketball League career, has been a member of the Boomers for the past three years but was one of the last players cut, denying him his first Olympic berth.

The Australian Olympic basketball teams are:

Opals: Lauren Jackson, Kristi Harrower, Belinda Snell, Jenni Screen, Sam Richards, Rachel Jarry, Liz Cambage, Kathleen Macleod, Jenna O’Hea, Abby Bishop, Suzy Batkovic, Laura Hodges. Coach Carrie Graf

Boomers: Patty Mills, Matthew Dellavedova, Joe Ingles, Adam Gibson, Peter Crawford, Brad Newley, David Barlow, David Andersen, Matt Nielsen, Mark Worthington, Aleks Maric, Aron Baynes. Coach Brett Brown
