VANDALS have struck another junior football club with at least one game being cancelled yesterday as Newcastle clubs continue to count the cost.
South Wallsend Junior Soccer Club players arrived at their grounds at Elermore Vale yesterday to find a goalpost ripped out and a crossbar snapped one week after Wallsend Football Club had its fields ripped up by hoons driving erratically on the grass.
South Wallsend secretary Angela Jordan said the club, which has 52 teams, has had to reschedule and reallocate games to other grounds a number of times this season due to vandalism.
‘‘We’re lucky in that we’ve got another field we can use, but we’ve still had to cancel one game today,’’ Ms Jordan said.
‘‘We’ve had the hoons in their cars and motorbikes ripping up our fields too, but when we ask council to put in bollards and things to stop them getting on the grounds they just say they don’t have the money in their budgets.’’
Ms Jordan said her club sympathised with Wallsend, which was told it would be without its grounds for three to four weeks. It has also been forced to reschedule or reallocate games to other fields.
