Warmed by the revels

CIVIC Park was aglow with candles and alight with wood fires on Saturday night. The occasion was the Winter Heat Festival. It was family entertainment at its best. Thousands of people, from toddlers to the elderly, sat or stood keeping warm with their backs to the fires. We were all entertained by drummers, fire-eaters, and fire-twirlers. Drums were available for children to use and they had so much fun. They also enjoyed the snow machine which spewed out artificial snow to set the winter theme.

Hot food, coffee and even gluhwein was available to help keep people warm. There was no overuse of alcohol, no fighting – just thousands of people peacefully enjoying the music.

I hope Winter Heat can survive and thrive, now that it is seeking new sponsorship after Newcastle City Council has withdrawn its funding. If we are truly interested in rejuvenating the inner city, then surely more entertainment like this, aimed at all age groups, is exactly what it needs. My congratulations to the promoters for a fantastic night.
