A MALE body has been discovered near Caves Beach, north of the area police had been searching for missing Lake Macquarie fishing mates Ben Winn and Trey Adamson.
The grim discovery was made by a fisherman on Saturday afternoon.
The body, which is yet to be formally identified, has been taken to Newcastle Morgue for forensic examination.
It was found just a few kilometres north of Munmorah State Recreation Area, where authorities had centred their land, air and sea search for the missing anglers after they disappeared a fortnight ago.
Family members have been searching for the pair since a weekend fishing trip to Flat Rock, a notorious fishing break that has claimed several lives in recent years, became a tragedy.
Mr Adamson’s 18-year-old girlfriend Niranda Blair, who had joined them on the trip, was found dead on nearby Ghosties Beach just hours after the alarm was raised on June 17.
Inquiries into her death are continuing.
While authorities were forced to scale back their efforts after several days, family members and friends have continually maintained a vigil and returned to scan the shoreline.
Family members of both men have said they are committed to finding answers about what happened to the popular pair.
Anyone with information that might assist investigators is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
