INDEPENDENT councillor Wendy Harrison will run for Lake Macquarie mayor at the September election with the endorsement of sitting and former mayors Greg Piper and John Kilpatrick.
Cr Harrison, who is deputy mayor, will lead the Independent Lake Alliance at the September 8 poll.
Cr Harrison, who has been a councillor for eight years, retired from her job as director of Lake Macquarie TAFE campuses last year.
‘‘I will devote all my efforts to the mayoral role, if elected,’’ she said.
Cr Harrison said the council had been ‘‘responsible and progressive’’ over the past two terms.
She said this was a ‘‘cornerstone of the alliance’s credentials’’.
‘‘There’s always more to be done and I will pursue constant improvement, if elected mayor,’’ she said.
‘‘I will ensure the elected council works closely with senior management for ongoing efficiencies.’’
Experienced councillors Laurie Coghlan and Barry Johnston will be part of Cr Harrison’s alliance.
The announcement confirmed the election would be a battle of the Harrisons.
Cr Jodie Harrison is the ALP’s mayoral candidate.
If either of the Harrisons won, they would become Lake Macquarie’s first female mayor.
