BITTER rivalries are erupting at Singleton Council where mayor Sue Moore is facing a no confidence motion.
Next Monday’s full council meeting will be the opportunity for long-standing animosities to flare when Cr Alison Howlett will move a no confidence motion against the mayor.
At the heart of the fight is the council’s code of conduct that has already embroiled the council - staff and councillors - in legal action estimated to cost almost $1million and how the mayor and councillors interact with the media.
Long-serving Cr Howlett says she won’t stand for council again because of the strain of the code of conduct legal action.
She wants the code amended to restrict what the mayor can say in her regular column in the Newcastle Herald’s sister publication the Singleton Argus.
Cr Howlett believes the mayor should represent the council in the column and not her personal views.
Cr Moore and fellow councillor Cr McNamara have clashed over the column, with accusations the mayor used it to attack her colleague.
Cr Moore has criticised councillors, including Cr Howlett, for airing ‘‘personal’’ views on issues in the Herald.
The mayor says she will contest the September 8 local government elections.
