Newcastle Herald reporters and photographers finalists in journalism awards

NINE Newcastle Herald reporters and photographers have been named as finalists for this year’s Northern NSW Journalism Awards.

The ‘‘Prodis’’ award presentation dinner will be hosted by Seven Network presenter Kylie Gillies and held at the Pavilion Function Centre in Tamworth on Saturday night.

Photographers Simone De Peak and Max Mason-Hubers, sports reporter Robert Dillon, civic reporter Ben Smee and feature writers Rosemarie Milsom and Helen Gregory have all been nominated in individual categories for their work.

Environment reporter Matthew Kelly, industry reporter Ian Kirkwood and state political reporter Michelle Harris have been nominated in the ‘‘team entry’’ section for their coverage of the chemical leaks and subsequent closure of Orica’s Kooragang Island plant.

Herald sports reporter James Gardiner is the reigning print journalist of the year.

Meanwhile, Herald cartoonist Peter Lewis is up for two gongs at the Rotary cartoon awards in Coffs Harbour on Saturday night.
