HUNTER residents receiving threatening text messages are being urged by police to ignore the scam.
NSW police are investigating the source of the message, which is believed to have been received by a large number of people across the state this morning.
The message reportedly says, ‘‘Sum1 paid me to kill you. get spared, 48hrs to pay $5000. If you inform the police or anybody, death is promised...E-mail me now. firstname.lastname@example.org.’’
Constable Tarryn Edwards said Lake Macquarie police have been flooded with phone calls from residents who have received the message.
Police are investigating the source of the message and do not believe it poses a genuine threat.
Police said to disregard the message and report the incident to the Police Assistance Line on 131 444.
