FISHNET stockings, hot pants and erm ... mouthguards have been pulled out of cupboards and the date has been set.
The new season of Newcastle Roller Derby begins this Saturday and that wild mix of sex kitten and serious skater will be back at Gateshead Indoor Sports World.
With names like Baroness Von Brutal, Belt’er Goodrem and several serious looking tattoos among them, these are athletes you don’t want to mess with.
Reigning champs the Habour Hellcats will be looking to claim more bruises and victories after winning all three games last season.
However the derby has been turned up side down with some major line-up changes.
Fort Smashleys’ new co-captain is Carly Tozer aka Babycakes and Harbour Hellcats have named their top dog as Kate Folbigg (or FannieTastic to her fans). Both women have swapped teams for this new season.
‘‘Spectators will do a double take on Saturday,’’ FannieTastic said.
‘‘We have spent three seasons on the opposite teams.’’
Babycakes will make her co-captaincy debut with the Fort Smashleys.
‘‘This is the first time ever I’ve been a captain of a sports team. I’m not usually directing other people,’’ she said.
Not that Babycakes has anything to worry about. She will be supported by plenty of ‘‘fresh meat’’ (women in training to enter the league) this season.
When they are not smashing it up on the roller derby rink at Gateshead, Babycakes and FannieTastic lead rather normal lives.
FannieTastic works in finance and Babycakes is a PhD student in environmental sciences at Newcastle University.
Fort Smashleys versus Harbour Hellcats will take place at Gateshead Indoor Sports World at 6.30pm on Saturday.
