Fire crews attended the two-storey premises in Newcastle just after midnight.

The ground floor was severely fire damaged while the upper level was mainly inflicted with smoke damage.

A Fire and Rescue NSW spokesman said the building, located next door to Hunter Valley Violins, was vacant at the time and investigations into the cause of the fire were continuing.
