I AM appalled at the removal of playgrounds around Port Stephens (‘‘Review comes into play’’ Herald 1/8). I believe this is a result of long-term financial mismanagement and low priority given to funding infrastructure maintenance over many years.
Now it is the children who miss out – and they don’t vote. Once the equipment is gone I have no faith in Port Stephens Council making replacements. How does the council determine that the children have all gone from a particular area?
It is also disappointing that play equipment is being removed from suburban parks in low socio-economic areas – just the places where many mothers do not have the luxury of a car in which to carry the children to some super park elsewhere. They should be able to take a simple walk with their little ones to a local park, with equipment to climb and space to run around in the fresh air.
