Learn how to lose, too

I WONDER if everyone is as disappointed as I am about the response of some of our Aussie athletes when they win anything but a gold medal. Isn’t being second or third best in the world enough for them? Or even seventh or 13th? The spirit of the Olympics seems to be foundering under personal egos and brain-training that makes them think only gold will do. Everything else is a failure.

I think the whole philosophy of the Olympics is about striving to be one’s best. We all know about the untold hours of training and dedication that athletes need in order to reach the high Olympic standard, but I believe there needs to be some training, also, in how to lose or come second with a good grace.

Newcastle and Lake Macquarie should be proud to have produced world class sailors who look to be among our limited group of potential gold-medal winners. Let’s get behind them and support their efforts. Go Nathan, Goobs and Slingo.
