A 30-year-old man has been charged over an alleged Kooragang Island carjacking this morning.
Police said a 22-year-old woman was driving across Kooragang Island towards Newcastle about 12.40am when she was flagged down by a man.
The man allegedly entered the vehicle before threatening the driver with a firearm, police said.
They drove for a while and she told the man she needed to get petrol and pulled into a service station, where police said she ran in and sought help from an attendant.
A man spoke with police at Newcastle train station about 3am this morning, and was arrested.
The man has been charged with take and detain with intent and inquiries are continuing.
He was refused bail to appear in Newcastle Local Court today.
