TWO years ago, Oma’s Kitchen introduced Newcastle to Bavarian delights including baked cheesecakes, Wiener schnitzel and their much-loved pork knuckle, and Novocastrians were hooked. So much so, that the cafe is now open seven days to satisfy demand.
Oma’s Kitchen menu uses recipes from Cathy’s German grandmother, who ran a guesthouse near the German border with Austria. On any given day, the Frens will be busy baking or serving customers, with their children Victoria and Jonathon, part of the team behind the close-knit family-run business.
An influx of German workers and punters have influenced the menu, giving people the chance to converse in German with a native speaker.
From March 11, Oma’s Kitchen will offer conversational German classes on Tuesday nights, with an hour-long class followed by a traditional Bavarian dish.
Oma’s has also introduced a range of specials including $2 takeaway coffee for this month only; Monday night free dessert with any main meal; and Wednesday night pork knuckle $25 special (usually $35, bookings essential as the dish takes six hours to prepare). They also have an express lunch menu, with items for those on the go for as little as $5.
Below is a selection of the new dishes on the Oma’s Kitchen menu.
