LETTER: Gallery suffers from ignorance

ON   1233 ABC Newcastle radio on Tuesday afternoon, while driving my car, I heard Newcastle City Councillor Nuatali Nelmes interviewed by Paul Bevan where she said that the art gallery should be gifted to the Gallery of NSW.

I nearly had an accident.

What a loopy idea:  To give away council’s most valuable asset (of around $90million) to Sydney to run and operate; all to obtain the arts funding.

If council got its act together, it could easily apply for funding. And lots of it.

I believe Cr Nelmes has little or no idea of the value the art gallery has to the Novocastrians and to the visitors of this beautiful city.

Yes, there are major problems at the moment and sacking people who know their jobs better than council staff and councillors is a shortsighted, disastrous way to solve the problem.   Sadly, I think we have people in council who can’t see value in art.

On the upside, they won’t be there forever and it is up to the Novocastrians to consider this when the next local government elections come around.
