UNA Rey is to be commended for her wide-ranging, thoughtful opinion piece ‘‘Focus must be firmly on art gallery’s future’’ (Herald 29/3).
It just seems a pity that she feels bound to diminish anything nice she says about the recent staff, foundation or society by starting following sentences with provisos like, ‘‘But ...’’, ‘‘However...’’ etc.
I can’t help wondering if she sees herself as a big cog in the wheel of ‘‘a new management model for the gallery’’.
If so, she’ll have done herself no harm by publicly embracing the concept of extending the gallery into the neighbouring library building.
While Dr Rey is young enough to look forward to a newly invigorated, expanded gallery, as I am sure it will become in time, I am too old to hold out much hope of seeing anything like the redevelopment which I have longed for, and supported in my tiny way, for a decade and more.
I therefore reserve the right to look back and grieve.
