Attempted robbery of Hunter Street takeaway

Police are investigating the attempted armed robbery of a takeaway shop in Newcastle last night.

About 5.25pm a man entered the takeaway store on Hunter Street. He approached the counter, brandished a knife and demanded cash.

The shopkeeper refused to hand over money and the man left the store empty-handed. He was last seen walking down King Street towards Auckland Street.

Police attended the scene and despite patrols of the area were unable to locate the man.

Investigators are now looking for a man of Caucasian appearance, aged in his 20s with a slim build, 185cm tall and short brown hair.

He was wearing a dark blue jumper, white t-shirt and chef-style pants.

Anyone who saw the man in the vicinity of Hunter Street or has information about his identity and whereabouts is asked to contact Newcastle City Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
