ABOUT 30 environmental activists and Fullerton Cove residents have set up a blockade to prevent coal seam drilling.
Dart Energy, the company which owns the coal seam gas exploration licences covering most of the Hunter, plans to drill pilot wells in the coming weeks.
The Herald reported on Saturday that the Environmental Defenders Office had written to Dart Energy to request it to carry out an Environmental Impact Statement before starting work at the site.

The office has foreshadowed legal action in the Land and Environment Court if the company refuses to carry out a study.
A spokesman for Dart Energy said the project had already been subject to a comprehensive environmental assessment over a nine-month period.
